The first York Region Optimist Chess Tournament took place in 1996. It was founded by Steve Granger, and supported by the Optimist Club of Aurora including Chris Tsang and Don Stubbs. Key original volunteers were: David Lawless, Doug Gillis, and Leslie Armstrong. The three other original area tournaments were headed by the following Optimist members: Gord McLean and Paul Comiere in Richmond Hill; John Webster in Markham; and Al Mardon and Al Gradeen in Newmarket. Last year the total number of students participating in the 4 area tournaments was 1,169. It is safe to say that our Optimist slogan, "Friend of Youth", is reflected through the continued success our tournaments in York Region. In 2008 we will enter into our 12th consecutive year of supporting student chess tournaments ! Qualifying Tournaments: The Markham/Thornhill tournament is now solely run by the Chess'n Math Association.
York Region Final Tournament: All York Regional qualifiers are done through the local Optimist area tournaments. See area tournament contact person if you have any questions of whether you should be attending.
